Car Transport Insurance

Just because you carry life insurance does not mean that you are expecting to die any second. Car transport insurance is the same, usually not needed, but essential.

The vast majority of auto transports go off without a hitch. The good transport companies have recognized the importance of this and have the equipment, trained employees, and expertise to make sure that the majority of moves are done without damaging your vehicle. Despite this reassuring fact, car transport insurance is absolutely essential for the exact same reason normal vehicle insurance is essential. Accidents can happen despite anyone’s good intentions.

It is possible that an individual auto insurance policy will cover your vehicle during transport, but do not just assume this. A call to your insurance company or agent and a review of you policy should confirm it. In most cases, the car will not be covered during the actual transport. The transport company will be able to provide complete insurance coverage, usually for only a small additional cost. If you are using this service, be sure to ask enough questions to satisfy yourself as to exactly what is covered and what is not.

The transport company is required to have a certificate of insurance coverage available. Do not be shy about asking to see it. You should ask about the amount of any deductible. Once you are satisfied with the insurance coverage you are going to receive, the next steps are the preparation of the vehicle and the inspections at both ends of the transport.

The preparation of the vehicle is important. From an insurance standpoint, preparation should include the removal of anything sticking out such as large mirrors or antennas. They are the most likely items to be dinged during the transport. Do not have anything loose inside the vehicle. Personal effects should not be transported in the vehicle anyway because of regulations, but they will not be covered by the insurance if they are damaged.

It is a good idea to wash the vehicle a day or two before the transport. This will allow you to see any scratches or dents more easily when you do the pre-shipment inspection. A camera is a good idea at both ends of the shipment. You should make a careful inspection with the transport driver at the time of pick-up and note the condition of the vehicle. When you pick up the vehicle at the destination, do another careful inspection. Take your time and note any damage on the bill of lading before signing it. The camera will come in handy here, too. If there is any damage, file a claim with the transport company as soon as possible.
