Importing Cars into Canada

Importing cars into Canada should not be difficult given the proximity and culture connection between the countries. It is not, either, but there are some things to know first.

The major issue in importing cars into Canada has to do with the differences in the inspection requirements between the two nations. This is not an uncommon issue in foreign importation of vehicles and Canada is not totally unreasonable in their requirements. Still, some work is going to have to be done in Canada in almost every case. The first step, however, is to get the car over the border. You need to have some paperwork ready for both sides of the border.

First, you have to get out of the United States. The United States is going to require what amounts, basically, to permission to export the vehicle out of the country. This form can be easily obtained, but you need to make sure you have applied for it at least 72 hours before your arrival at the border crossing. Once you have managed to get past the US side, you can begin to deal with the Canadian importation process.

This is going to cost some money. Canada is going to impose an import fee that is just under $200 and also require payment of a General Sale Tax in many cases. The Province of Quebec requires an additional local sales tax. You need to contact the Canadian Government to determine if your vehicle is going to be subject to this tax. If you are, you are going to have to pay it right at the border before entering the country.

One important piece of required paperwork that often causes problems if it is overlooked is a Release from Recall letter. This is simply a written statement on the letterhead of a dealer or manufacturer that affirms the vehicle being imported is not currently subject to any recall. This letter must be physically present with you before you can enter the country.

The last problem will be the modifications required to bring the vehicle into line with Canadian standards. At least, you are given 45 days to complete this process. The modifications include such items as metric speedometers and odometers and daytime running lights. All vehicles are also required to have improved child restraint harness anchorage. If the vehicle does not pass an inspection showing that they comply with these standards within 45 days, it will have to be taken back out of the country.
